American Heart Association

ECG & Pharmacology Course*

Specifically designed to address a key knowledge gap in Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Pharmacology, the American Heart Association’s adult ECG & Pharmacology Course is a new program focused on specific ECG recognition skills and drug treatment knowledge. The course is a pre-course option for ACLS students and other healthcare providers, or is also intended for ACLS students who need to improve after the ACLS pre-course self-assessment test. ECG & Pharmacology contains two modules, ECG and Pharmacology, which may be taken together or separately.

Course Covers

  • Key changes reflecting science in the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
  • Basic electrophysiology
  • Normal ECG measurements
  • Basic arrhythmias
  • Administration of appropriate drugs within the ACLS algorithms

Course Content

  • Heart anatomy
  • Basic electrophysiology
  • Normal ECG measurements
  • Basic arrhythmias

  • Basic ACLS drugs and usage
  • Drugs, doses and routes of administration during cardiovascular emergencies
  • Integrate basic drug pharmacology into ACLS algorithms

Course Objectives

Objectives for the ECG module:

  • Explain heart anatomy and basic electrophysiology
  • Explain normal ECG measurements
  • Recognize and understand basic arrhythmias

Objectives for the Pharmacology module:

  • Know basic ACLS drugs and usage
  • Understand drugs, doses and routes of administration during cardiovascular emergencies
  • Learn to integrate basic drug pharmacology into ACLS algorithms

  • Enhanced ECG recognition skills competency important to ACLS certification
  • Improved knowledge and more effective use of drugs during peri-arrest or cardiac arrest
  • Improved student success in achieving ACLS certification
  • Strengthened ACLS algorithms competency
  • High knowledge retention on specific areas through modular course design
  • Only course in market focused on this critical knowledge

The ECG & Pharmacology Course is for healthcare professionals who participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, residents, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical pharmacists and ECG technicians.
